Molecular Biology and Genetics

Description.

DNA, proteins, protein structure and function, flow of genetic information, mRNA, exons and introns, operons. Genetic code, protein synthesis. Regulation of gene expression. Introduction to epigenetics. Recombinant DNA technology. Cell cycle, Mitosis, Mitosis, Reduction, Cell cycle control, Apoptosis. Chromosomes, karyotype, nucleosomes. DNA damage and repair, Repair mechanisms. Gene silencing through small RNA (miRNA). Membrane structure and function, transmembrane transport of proteins. Cellular signaling communication. Nuclear receptors. Genetics. Principles of Mendelian inheritance, (phylogeny, epistasis, gene interactions, chromosomal abnormalities), non-Mendelian inheritance. Polygenic and factorial inheritance. Linking genes, Genetic maps. Common multifactorial diseases, personalised medicine, Evolution. Natural selection – adaptation. Diversity of qualitative and quantitative characters, Population structure, Population genetics (Hardy-Weinberg Theorem). Biological databases: PubMed, Genebank, Uniprot, PDB, PFAM, SCOPE, CATH, PROSITE. Genomics, Human Genome Mapping Project, Structural, Functional and Comparative Genomics, Transcriptome and other branches of ‘omics, Pharmacogenetics and Pharmacogenomics, Cancer Genomics Project. Presentation of work.
